Inspired & the Sleep
Every song by Inspired & the Sleep sounds like a meta making of vignette of that same track. At points you feel like you’re listening to the germinal sonics songwriter Max Greenhalgh initially had in his head for the song. Then it’s like you’re hearing the rawest moments of recording and the next thing you know you get the sense you’re looking over his shoulder as he experiments with effects on his laptop. Suddenly you’re listening to a hearty live performance of the tune that somehow leaves you encompassing the streamlined conceptual space of the song somewhere between a music video and a dream. The behind-the-scenes music of San Diego’s Inspired & the Sleep is both big and small, building and deconstructing, ramshackle and refined. These paradoxical traits seem to be inherent in an act that bills itself as both a band and solo-endeavor. It’s appropriate considering the journey his lovely lo-fi pop takes you on that Max Greenhalgh would send us a top ten list of the best songs to listen to while on tour. Lay me back down onto that sand covered. A prop of a sun carefully lowered down. Walks in the park set to a gleeful score. We talked on our dreams what the future has stored. Set on a stage filled out by paper mache. Hand painted trees bright colors of the day. But none of its real they’re all just images you see. An afternoon passtime for a ten dollar fee.

Yeah she loved me in note. It helps her think to write it down. Nice to see you in my coat. Provide a space that’s safe and sound. Drilling oil off the coast. I’m mining gold and buying stocks. Laugh out loud at my own jokes. Not a soul around to mock.
I smile so much brighter. Than any on God’s green earth. That body’s geography. I’ll search.
Pillow cheeks, a crescent moon. Will keep me howling at the sky. I’m a knife and you’re my spoon. That strong instinct to cut and pry. Peace of mind for every bite. Just grind those teeth and let it fade. Holding hands to start a fight. I’m stabbing hugs behind a blade.

We’ve followed Max Greenleigh project Inspired & The Sleep for a bit now and always note how he’s consistently improved with every track released. Brand new single “Sink” continues that trend.
